Take Up Units

As conveyor system lengths increase, the problem of maintaining belt tensions throughout the system becomes more pronounced. One optionavailable to conveyor system engineers is the installation of take-up systems at multiple locations along the conveyor.

Take-up units perform two fundamental tasks, maintain sufficient tension at the drive to prevent slip between the belt and the drive pulley, and control tensionto prevent excessive belt sag or high belt stress.

MES can supply Take-Up Units in a variety of sizes. The most popular types of take-up are the fixed type (normally referred to as a screw take-up STU) and the automatic or Gravity take-up (GTU).

The screw take-up is normally used on short conveyors up to a length of 50m. Over 50m an automatic/gravity take-up system should be used to ensure constant pre-tension.

Take-Up Units are fitted on conveyor belts for a number of reasons:

  • To ensure adequate tension of the belt leaving the drive pulley so as to avoid any slippage of the belt.
  • To ensure proper belt tension at the loading and other points along the conveyor.
  • To compensate for changes in belt length due to elongation.
  • To provide extra length to the belt for ease of belt splicing if needed.
